Research
Throughout its more than 120-year history, the Hygiene Institute of the Ruhr Area (Hyg) has always been closely linked to research – whether in combating a growing epidemic in Europe or, in more recent decades after the war, in the fields of environmental safety and policy. As a non-profit organization, the association is committed to emerging trends in environmental safety. It also actively contributes to the further development of the field in cooperation with experts and stakeholders from academia and other non-profit institutions. Today, the Hygiene Institute primarily operates in the fields of chemical, biological, and physical environmental analysis.
Hyg in research
As a medium-sized enterprise (SME), we are professionally qualified, in particular, to:
- Routinely provide our broad range of accredited environmental analytical services to research clients who require experienced SMEs within national and international research consortia. We work in accordance with national and international standards and possess the technical expertise to adapt to specific project requirements.
- Participate as a leading SME in funding calls, enabling us to contribute to the development of analytical and bioanalytical testing methods for future German and EU environmental regulations and their implementation.
- Contribute within research consortia to the development of new biological and analytical methods and to advance faster and more efficient techniques for future compliance requirements.
Hygiene Institute as an affiliated institute of RUB
We promote teaching and research in cooperation with universities and universities of applied sciences. Since August 1991, the Hygiene Institute of the Ruhr Area, Institute for Environmental Hygiene and toxicology, has been recognized as an affiliated scientific institution of Ruhr University Bochum. We also maintain further collaborations with RWTH Aachen University. We are pleased to participate in projects that benefit from our expertise and contribute our decades of experience.
Research and Education
Scientific research is one of the key foundations for preventive environmental and health protection in our interconnected world. We conduct research projects whose results are published in scientific journals and incorporated into standards and regulations. In addition, we offer our staff opportunities to participate in internal and external training courses to ensure they remain up to date with the latest developments.
Knowledge transfer
We provide fundamental knowledge through carefully selected topics in our teaching activities. At the same time, we closely link this knowledge with practical experience gained from everyday applications. This direct connection allows for a deeper understanding of natural processes and the complex reactions associated with materials and products. We share this experience through training events for professionals as well as interested members of the public, often in close cooperation with our partners.
Modern competence center
Our in-house competence center, equipped with modern teaching and communication technology (video conferencing), serves as a central hub for hosting seminars and other events – on-site, digital, or hybrid.
